earthside
The return of "earthside" for two nights only. If you missed out the first time - this is your chance!
Candice is bringing back her one-woman play "earthside" to the stage — a dark comedy that navigates the chaotic, bittersweet space between life and death while charting the challenges of first-time motherhood.
Written and performed by Candice and directed by Jennifer Steyn, "earthside" uses irreverent humour and candid reflection to explore grief, joy and the absurd overlap of both in the “in-between.” Conceived during Spark in The Dark’s Solo writing workshop, the piece promises moments of levity, deep reflection and sharp, uncompromising honesty. The show is recommended for audiences 13 and over.
Candice trained at the Atlantic Theatre Company’s Acting Conservatory (founded by William H. Macy and David Mamet). Her stage credits include Never Sleep Alone (Joe’s Pub, NYC), Gruesome Playground Injuries (directed by Tara Notcutt at Alexander Bar), and Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues (directed by Marlisa Doubell). She is also a prolific voice actor, known for roles on international Zee World series such as Sands of Time, where she voiced the lead character Mohini.
In addition to her performance work, Candice founded Sarafina Magazine, an online publication celebrating South African women in the arts, which ran from 2016 to 2021.
Director Jennifer Steyn—herself an award-nominated actor and educator with four decades in performance—says her directing approach is to “hold space for a creative evolution.” She describes working with performer-written material as an invitation for the artist to go deeper into vulnerable territory, and emphasizes the responsibility of witnessing and honouring that risk.
"earthside" marks another bold, personal project in Candice's career, blending sharp comedic instincts with raw emotional terrain and reinforcing her profile as an inventive voice in contemporary South African theatre.
Two Performances only: 27th and 28th July @ 7pm
