Louw Venter nominated for Best Actor in a Feature Film - 19th Annual SAFTAs Som van Twee Popcorn Gorilla

Our Louw Venter has been nominated for a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Actor in a Feature Film for his performance in the comedy‑drama Som van Twee.

Directed by actress‑turned‑filmmaker Simonè Pretorius in her feature debut, Som van Twee stars Venter as Henk, a man whose ill‑timed confession at his wife Nicolene’s funeral—that he leaked the matric Maths exam years earlier—sets the film’s disruptive events in motion. The Education Department’s decision to have the entire class of 1990 rewrite the exam forces Henk to enlist his son Renier (Adriaan Havenga) as a tutor. The tutoring sessions quickly expose a deeply strained, conflict‑ridden father‑son relationship, while Henk’s meddlesome father Gert, played by veteran actor James Borthwick, further complicates the situation.

The film pairs Venter’s charismatic lead performance with Borthwick’s seasoned presence and marks a notable directorial debut for Pretorius, blending cringe comedy with family drama. Critics and audiences have highlighted the film’s sharp character dynamics and emotional warmth.
