Biography

Zikhona Sodlaka is a celebrated South African actress, singer, host, and writer best known for her performances in television series such as Shooting StarsRhythm CitySoul CityIntsikaMontanaTsha TshaIgazi, and Generations. She has also starred in acclaimed films including Mandela: Long Walk to FreedomThe Two of UsSkeem, and Thina Sobabili.

Born in the Eastern Cape and raised in KwaZulu-Natal, Sodlaka attended Excelsior Senior Secondary School before completing her schooling at Warriors Rust High School in Margate. She later studied Business Administration at Shepstone College.

Her breakthrough role came in Tsha Tsha, where she played the tomboy character Zukiswa, winning the hearts of audiences across South Africa. The series later received an International Emmy nomination for Best Foreign Drama. Her career continued to flourish with her leading role as Ayanda Tau in Shooting Stars, where she also showcased her singing talent.

In 2008, she portrayed Lady Macbeth (Ava) in the Shakespeare adaptation Entabeni, a performance widely regarded as one of her strongest works. The production received multiple South African Film and Television Awards nominations, including Best Drama and Best Ensemble Cast. She also appeared in A Place Called Home and later starred in Montana, which explored life in post-apartheid South Africa.

Sodlaka further cemented her status with memorable performances in Soul City, where she portrayed a woman battling alcoholism and HIV/AIDS, and in Rhythm City as the tough police officer Suarez Baloyi. Her role in Intersexions also contributed to the show’s critical acclaim and multiple SAFTA wins.

Internationally, she gained attention for portraying Nosekeni, Nelson Mandela’s mother, in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom alongside Idris Elba. She later joined popular South African soapies such as Muvhango and Generations, where her performances were praised for their intensity and emotional depth.

Beyond acting, Sodlaka is also a presenter and entrepreneur. She hosted Top Actor SA and later Top Actor Africa, expanding her profile across the continent. She is also passionate about philanthropy and the empowerment of the arts through the Zikhona Sodlaka Foundation.

In 2023, she participated in The Masked Singer South Africa as “The Fox” and was unmasked on 19 August 2023. The same year, she received a National Film & Television Awards for her performance in the The Wife on Showmax.
