Biography

Bongani Bennedict Masango is a versatile screen and theatre actor, writer, and director with a deep commitment to storytelling across live and filmed mediums. Trained and shaped by both classical and contemporary performance traditions, his work is grounded in emotional truth, physical precision, and socially engaged narratives. As an actor, Bongani has appeared in a wide range of acclaimed stage and screen productions. He featured as an Associate Producer, cast coordinator, and cameo performer in the film MATWETWE, and has been seen by television audiences on the SABC 1 reality series Life’s a Stage. His theatre career includes collaborations with leading South African and international practitioners, notably performing in TRAPPED (2012) by Princess Mhlongo, which toured Grahamstown and Austria’s Salzburg Arts Festival. He has worked extensively under the direction of Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom, appearing in Uncle Vanya (2013), Relativity (2013), and Protest (2014), productions that further refined his craft as a nuanced and politically aware performer. Bongani also performed in Aubrey Sekhabi’s Sophiatown (2017–2019), contributing to its sustained national impact. Internationally, Bongani continues to perform in the critically acclaimed production Dark Noon (2019–present), directed by Tue Biering and Nhlanhla Mahlangu, which premiered in Copenhagen, Denmark, and continues to tour globally. Alongside his acting career, Bongani is an accomplished director, writer, and producer. He wrote and directed the web series NGEVI (2020) and has directed numerous theatre productions, including Road to Damascus (2013 & 2015), The Kraal (2015), Kwa Nhliziyo Village (2010–2023), The Brother’s Wife by Paul Surridge (2017 & 2023), and J.P. Clark’s Song of a Goat (2012). His Zimbabwean production Liberation (2017) earned a prestigious NAMA Award, followed by another NAMA Award–winning production, Ukama (2018–2019 & 2023). In 2018, his production Mas’Kitlana received the Social Impact Award at the Kopanong Arts Festival. In 2025, Bongani served as Assistant Director on the South African classic My Children! My Africa!, directed by Aubrey W. Sekhabi, which premiered at the South African State Theatre and toured to the Lagos International Theatre Festival in Nigeria. He recently adapted and directed George Orwell’s Animal Farm in collaboration with Savanna Trust, reimagined as ZI-Animal Farm. Committed to nurturing future artists, Bongani is a part-time Lecturer in Acting and Directing at Tshwane University of Technology. He is also the founder of the Zes’khethu Storytelling Festival (est. 2018) and The Bridge Repertory (est. 2022), initiatives dedicated to developing contemporary African performance and new theatrical voices.
